10 Credible Amapiano Music Producers

Amapiano is one of the most popular genres of music in South Africa right now if not the most popular. The ranks of devotees of the genre keep swelling, so it is safe to say the genre might be around for a long time.

In this post, we are going to introduce you to key players in the field – 10 credible amapiano music producers who are driving the genre into new frontiers. You probably already know some of the producers on this list. They are also singers in the genre, makers of hits and in-demand collaborators.

The list of 10 credible amapiano producers is given in no particular order. We’re confident you’ll love the list anyway. Let’s leap, shall we?

1. Kabza De Small

Kabza De Small. Don’t let the adopted stage name fool you. The songster is actually one of the giants in the amapiano universe.  He is justly known as the king of amapiano, having taken on the genre at a time many wouldn’t go near and done wonders with it.

To Kabza De Small’s credit, he is not only a fine producer in amapiano but in other genres as well. If you wonder why he has “Small” to his stage name, it is only because of his spare frame – or small stature, if you please. Musically, he is huge.

2. DJ Maphorisa

Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe is the luxury brand-loving amapiano producer who goes by the stage name of DJ Maphorisa. Originally known as a singer and producer in gqom – a genre in which he has many hits – the muso made a seamless transition to amapiano, a genre where he now has many hits also.

DJ Maphorisa teamed up with Kabza De Small and has been releasing hit after hit with him. The two artistes are almost inseparable right now. As a team, they are known as the Piano Kings, a reflection of their standing in South Africa’s amapiano universe.

3. Vigro Deep

Vigro Deep is one of the youngest amapiano producers out there but with a robust following. Fondly called Baby Boy in reference to his albums of the same title, the songster is one name that cannot be missed when amapiano is mentioned in Mzansi.

4. De Mthuda

De Mthuda is another notable amapiano producer you should be familiar with. Although a fine producer like any out there, De Mthuda appears not to be interested in the amapiano crown – and not in seeing anyone appropriate the same.

Two months ago when Kabza De Small released an album titled “I Am The King Of Amapiano,” De Mthuda had countered “There’s No King” in a yet to be released project.

5. MFR Souls

MFR Souls is actually a group. But it is made up of artistes who are also fine producers in the genre. You might wish to check them out.RECOMMENDED

6. Njelic

Njelic might be used as an example of the vitality of not giving up on your dreams. The songster has moved from an obscure figure to a notable singer and producer in the amapiano genre with several fine numbers to his name.

The “Shesha” crooner has worked with some of the music industry’s notable voices, including De Mthuda and MKeyz.

7. Mas Musiq

Mas Musiq is one of the artistes on DJ Maphorisa’s Blaqboy Music record label. He’s a fine singer and a fine producer, too. If you haven’t heard of him up to this point, then you probably haven’t been following South African music.

Mas Musiq, who also holds the offices of a DJ, released a splendid body of work titled “Mambisa” EP in 2019.

8. Samthing Soweto

Samthing Soweto is one of amapiano’s finest, period! The “Akulaleki” hitmaker is one of the best singers in the amapiano genre and incidentally one of the finest producers as well.  He is one of the artistes co-opted on Cassper Nyovest’s “Any Minute Now (AMN)” album.

The songster became famous years ago following a feature appearance on Sun-El Musician’s single “Akanamali.”

9. DJ Dansanie

DJ Dansanie holds the offices of a disc jockey and producer and he is darn good in both. He has several fine numbers to his name, including “uYabona (Amapiano Hit).” We count him among the amapiano producers whose songs you should hear.

10 Thebelebe Onalenna

Thebelebe Onalenna is known simply by his first name Thebelebe. Although pretty young on the music scene, the songster is already making a name for himself as a fine producer. His song “Jebson” is one you wouldn’t mind checking out right away.

If you care for more engaging numbers, you may want to check out his catalogue. Rest assured it is going to be a beautiful journey of discovery. Cheers if you should decide to take the leap.
