Okmalumkoolkat Biography

Smiso Brian Zwane also known as Okmalumkoolkat was born on July 27th, 1983 in the Umlazi Township in Durban, South Africa. He is a rapper and one-half of the rap / electronic duo, Dirty Paraffin which was formed in Johannesburg.

Okmalumkoolkat is also a DJ, dancer, a Graphic Designer, and a songwriter. He is also known by a number of monikers including Smart Mampara, DJ Sharp Sharp, Future Mfana, Mlazi Milano, Denzel Swekington, Zupa Sanyomfa, Zulu Michael Jackson, Zulu Computer, Zulu Skywater, Don Spovington, Bhut’Yangchaza, Malume Wengane, and Imbongolo YaseStudio.

He began his music career in 2007. Since then, he is credited to have released various hit songs including “Mswenkofontein” featuring Stilo Magolide & uSanele, “Gusheshe” with Cassper Nyovest, and many more.

He tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Princess Zulu in December, 2019.

Family & Beginnings

Okmalumkoolkat was born, Smiso Brian Zwane in Umlazi, Durban, a place he called “a coastal city, a lot more steady than Johannesburg”. Following his graduation from college, he moved to Johannesburg where he met Dokta SpiZee and formed Dirty Paraffin.

The two lived together, and shared a mutual passion for art. This led to them collaborating together.

In the duo, SpiZee was responsible for the music production, while Okmalum handled the writing of the songs. The duo dropped an album titled “The Greatest Hits Vol. I” in 2009. Coupled with their side hustles, the two focused more on pushing videos and music remixes.

Following a robbery at the house in which they lived together, the two decided to go job hunting. Okmalum put the skills he learnt during his college years to use and designed layouts and brands for several companies including Nike.

In 2012, he focused more on his career and worked with London production trio, LV on their album, Sebenza which was released under Hyperdub.

In 2013, Okmalum was featured on Zintle Mbekeli’s “Amakamera ang’shoote”. Although she was his co-worker, he met her on Instagram. Their collaborative song was met with positive reviews. He later on signed to Austrian label, Affine Records through which he released his EP, Holy Oxygen.

In December 2016, he released his debut album Mlazi Milano which was supported by two singles “Ntwana Yam” and “Gqi” featuring Durban duo, Amadando. The songs were released before the album dropped.

Musical Milestones

Okmalumkoolkat began writing songs between 2007 and 2008 after moving to Johannesburg and being influenced by old South African music, DJ Shadow and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He wrote his first song for the character Okmalumkoolkat, which would go on to become his most popular moniker. The song was written to introduce himself as an artist.

He later wrote another track called “Big Bootyholic” over the song “Trans-Europe Express” by Kraftwerk. After that, he began seriously writing songs as an artist.

He made his first big break when he featured on the song “Gusheshe” with Cassper Nyovest. The song became a huge hit and garnered various awards. He has since released a few projects as part of the duo, Dirty Paraffin, and several others as Okmalumkoolkat.

Holy Oxygen (EP) (2014);

Okmalumkoolkat released his first solo project, the Holy Oxygen EP in 2014. It was preceded by the following singles “Ntwana Yam” and “Gqi” featuring Amadando which was released a month before the album dropped. The EP announced him as a solo artist.

100k MaCassette (Mixtape) (2015);

In 2015, he dropped the 15-track mixtape, 100k Macassette which featured contributions from Riky Rick, Mashayabhuqe, KaMamba and more. The Mixtape was preceded by the single “Free 100K Macassette”.

Mlazi Milano (Album) (2016);

In December 2016, Okmalum released his debut album “Mlazi Milano”. The album housed 17 tracks and featured contributions from AKA, Bra Sol and Sho Madjozi. It also contained some songs off his previously released projects including Gqi featuring Amadando.

Holy Oxygen II (EP) (2017);

In March 2017, Okmalumkoolkat released the second installment of the Holy Oxygen EP. The EP was praised to be better than the first. The 4-track EP was produced by CiD Rim and written by Okmalum.

Bhlomington (EP) (2020)

After a long project release drought, Okmalum released the Bhlomington EP in May 2020. The 6-track EP featured contributions from Da L.E.S and production Kenzie Beatz, Zoocci Coke Dope, 2 Kriss, and G Star Beatz.
