It feels like his brand new album Better will go a long way in solidifying Deante Hitchcock as one of the game’s crucial emerging players. Produced by Brandon Phillips-Taylor, the instrumental combines a classy piano progression with urgent pizzicato plucks and midwest-inspired synth whines. “Dead to the world, I ain’t even get a funeral,” he spits, riding the beat with confident swagger. “See this life black and white like Zoboomafoo, tryna figure it out like a Rubik’s cube.” In many ways the perfect counterpart to Hitchcock’s dexterous delivery, Nudy anchors the track with his signature off-kilter flow; at times he stutters his lines, stretching bars to land in an unpredictable fashion.
