Fans have been enjoying exclusive access into the life beyond the headlines of local superstar Boitumelo “Boity” Thulo in her hit reality show Boity: Own Your Throne. The show is BET’s first local reality show to hit the African continent, and has been a huge hit with fans and entertainment enthusiasts since premiering 5 January, 2020. In the show, the actress, rapper and TV host gives viewers a front-row seat into her busy life. She’s also opened up about the things that mean the most to her, like her family, her ancestry and her commitment to helping women and girls live their truth with confidence. Now, as the first season draws to a close, dstv.co.za. chatted to the star to reflect on everything she’s allowed us to learn about her this year.

All real, all the time

It’s not always about business for the Potchefstroom-born star; family is always the most important. In her show, Boity zoomed in on her close relationship with her mother, Modiehi Thulo. Just like any mother-daughter relationship, they have their ups and downs but through it all, they’ve shown that their bond is unbreakable. Boity was raised in a single parent household she believes that she wouldn’t change anything about her family dynamic. Would viewers have known all of this about Boity if she hadn’t decided to do the reality show? Probably not. So, why did she choose to allow fans this kind of access to her personal life? “Now is the perfect time because I think I’m more comfortable in terms of being grounded in a vulnerable state with my supporters and my fans,” Boity says. “II know who I am now.”

New adventures

One of SA’s most-followed personalities on social media, Boity has come a long way from that advert that helped to launch her TV career. Since then, she’s dabbled in a lot of things including acting on Mzansi Magic’s Rockville, hosting several shows and collaborating with clothing brands. Although fans see her on the screen and get a glimpse of what she’s up to on the ‘gram, she felt it was important for them to know her better. “I can’t give people regurgitated stuff that they’ve seen,” she says,. “It’s important for me to tap into something that people don’t get to see.” One thing that her supporters get to be a part of through the show is her journey in the hip hop industry. They’ve seen her at gigs and making songs with other artists. With a platinum selling debut record Wuz Dat, her music has gone all the way to the top. Boity admitted that she didn’t know she’d get here. “I knew it [music] was something that I wanted to explore but maybe like, ‘let me do just one song and get it out of my system’. But I didn’t know that once I stepped into it, I would really feel so at home.” Now that she’s owning her throne in the music scene, what else does Boity have in store for her fans? Well, look out for more hits and an album. Oh, she also wants to start a family. “In the next ten years I’m really hoping for motherhood, that would be amazing. I can’t wait to wear that hat,” she says.

Owning the moment

With a successful career, Boity is certainly redefining what it means to be a queen in 2020. She believes that it’s not about following what others are doing but pursuing the things that you love. “For me, it’s just being less afraid of exploring more of what you love… Being more fearless in terms of pursuing the desires of your heart,” she says. “I think that does a lot for your soul, your being and that’s where the queendom resides.” We stan Boity because through her life, she encourages fans to stay true to who they are. “It’s so much easier to run your own race.” Watch Boity: Own Your Throne every Wednesday at 21:30 on BET (DStv 124).
